Before the Lecture
- Carefully read our Course Web Site.
- Check the course areas in Blackboard.
- Create an account and register for our course in Piazza.
- Subscribe to receive notifications from Piazza.
- Create an account at Sage Math Cloud. You should have received an invitation to collaborate in the "Math 504 - Summer 2016" project that I've created. You don't need to worry much about it for now, but watch the videos I've posted to see how it works.
- Watch the videos on:
- Piazza and Sage Math Cloud. This is a very quick introduction on how we will use Piazza and Sage Math Cloud in our course.
- Optional: Introduction to SageMathCloud: here I show a little about LaTeX and the use of SageMathCloud, but in much more detail that the previous one. This video is long (45 minutes) and LaTeX is not required, so just watch it if you are interested in learning more about it.
- Read the Introduction from our textbook. Read it briefly! Don't get too caught up, after all, this is just an introduction. (Note: Look at the section Outcomes to see what you are expected to get from the reading, perhaps after some in class help.)
- Write down all questions about the above topics to bring to our (online) lecture.
- If you have math questions, you can also type them, ahead of time, in the file "Questions.tex" (a LaTeX file) in Sage Math Cloud (under the "Math 504 - Summer 2016" project). You might see others questions in there (everyone will use the same file).
- Check if you are prepared for our lecture
with Zoom.
- Check LiveOnline@UT, the official page for Zoom.
- If possible, do a Test Flight, as explained in an Announcement on Blackboard.
- Check the Resources Meeting for Participants.
- Optional: If you have time, think about problems 4 and 6 (from the Introduction).
- Optional: Post an introduction on Blackboard.
Related Problems
- Introduction (on pg. 6): no problem is due as HW, but you can look at 4 and 6.
In Class
In class:
- I will answer questions about the course structure.
- I will answer questions about the Introduction.
- We will get used to Zoom's interface and functionality.
- I will discuss the use of Sage Math Cloud and Piazza.
- I will answer any other questions.
- We will talk a little about LaTeX.
Outcomes
After the assignment (before class) and class:
- You should understand how the course will be run.
- You should be (mostly) comfortable with Blackboard, Zoom, Piazza and Sage Math Cloud.
- You should (from the reading):
- Know hat a prime number is.
- Remember how to factor integers. (It might be a good time to remind yourself of the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic (factorization into primes).)
- Have an idea of what a proof is like and why is its importance.
