TEXT: CALCULUS, by T.Apostol, v.1, 2nd. edition

 COURSE OUTLINE

Goals and philosophy: The text- which will be followed closely- presents the theorems of
differential and integral calculus in a rigorous deductive fashion. Compared to the standard
calculus sequence, the honors sequence emphasizes a conceptual approach.
This does not mean an emphasis on proofs (although we {\em will}
see the proofs of all the main results), but on understanding what the definitions and
theorems mean (geometrically) and on the logical development.

Chapters covered: we will spend a week or two on the introductory chapter (axioms for the
real numbers, proofs by induction), then go on to chapters 1-7, 10,11. Some sections
will be skipped.

CLASS POLICIES

1. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY -
Students who miss a class are responsible for finding out what was covered.

2.HOMEWORK: Two lists of problems will be included with each section: those marked
(E) will be done in class as examples; those marked (H) are homework problems.
Due dates will be posted on this site-homework is due at the beginning of class.
Please note: the number of problems due each week is relatively small, but some of the
problems may
not be straightforward. For full credit, detailed and neatly written solutions must be given.

3.GRADING: The course grade will be based on: homework and quizzes (20%), 3 in-class tests (16% ea.) and
a comprehensive final (32\). There will be no makeup tests- the instructor must be notified  in advance of any
justifiable date conflicts.

TEST DATES/TOPICS: 9/24: Ch. 1,2,3 11/5: Ch 4,5,6,7 12/3:Ch. 10,11

FINAL EXAM: Monday, 12/13

My usual grading scale for this course is: A: 80-100; B:70-79; C: 55-69; D: 40-54. Below 40 OR less
than 40% on the final:F
