UTK-PDE DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
UTK-PDE Distinguished Lecture Series is a series of lectures in partial differential equations (PDEs) delivered virtually by world renowned mathematicians. Each part in the series consists of three to five lectures covering core ideas, techniques, and state of the art in selected topics in the area of partial differential equations. Lectures will be thoughtfully designed and technically simplified so that they will be accessible to an audience with only basic background in Analysis and PDEs. All lectures will be recorded and posted together with lecture notes (Youtube Channel UTK-PDE Lecture Series). The series is founded and organized by Dr. Tuoc Phan with the support from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville.
Series V (Spring 2023): Professor Zhongwei Shen (Department of Mathematics of University of Kentucky) will deliver 3 virtual lectures (through zoom) at 2:30PM (US Eastern time) on March 23rd, 30th, and April 13th. Brief Biography: Zhongwei Shen received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1989 under the supervision of Carlos Kenig. Shen joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in 1995, where he was promoted to professor in 2003. He served as chair of the Mathematics Department from 2007 to 2011. Professor Shen's research interests lie at the interface of harmonic analysis and partial differential equations. He is particularly interested in boundary value problems in non-smooth domains, the homogenization theory, spectrum properties of Schrodinger operators, the Navier-Stokes equations, unique continuation problems, and Riesz transforms associated with general second-order elliptic operators. Professor Shen's research was recognized by many awards. In particular, Professor Shen was awarded a Centennial Fellowship by the AMS in 1997. Shen held the Ralph E. and Norma L. Edwards Research Professorship in Mathematics from 2007 to 2010 and was awarded a University of Kentucky Research Professorship for 2013-2014. In 2016 he was awarded the title of College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor.
Additional information about Professor Shen can be found in this Wikipedia page and in his home page.
Title: Quantitative Homogenization of Elliptic Equations
Abstract: These lectures provide an introduction to the quantitative homogenization theory for second order elliptic equations and systems in divergence form with periodic coefficients. We begin with the classical qualitative theory of homogenization in Lecture One and give an overview of the quantitative results obtained in recent years. In Lectures Two and Three, we will discuss some of techniques developed to establish the large-scale regularity estimates.
