I heard the sad news about Tom Petty while listening to my car radio. One of his songs came on the air and I remember turning up the volume and rolling down my window. I wanted the entire world to hear Tom Petty...
   
My parents instilled a lifetime love of listening to music. I recall their sadness when Elvis passed, and John Lennon was taken from us. I was too young to fully understand how they felt, but as my fondness for music grew, I understood.

Many moving comments have been shared on Tom Petty Radio, some bringing tears to my eyes. Although one caller did make me chuckle. He said he didn't care much for listening to music, except for Tom Petty.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' live recordings are amazing! "Here Comes My Girl" (London-1980), "Don't Bring Me Down" (Boston-1978), "American Girl" (San Francisco-1983), "The Waiting" (Los Angeles-1985), and "I Won't Back Down" (San Francisco-1987) are among my favorites.

Neil Peart was perhaps the most powerful pillar of the Canadian rock trio Rush. Not only was he an amazing drummer, but Neil also wrote many of the thought provoking lyrics for the band, including my all time favorite, "The Spirit of Radio".

I had resisted in the past including "Tom Sawyer" on my playlist, only because I had heard it so often during my teen years. However I would be remiss in not including it now.

Listening to Rush invokes a wonderful escape, and creates a mini movie in one's own head. Neil's solos add an extraordinary punch, and should make all want to rock out whenever they hear a Rush song play. - Carmine Schulze, Jan 2020

If anyone asked me back in high school what my favorite band was, I would immediately answer Van Halen. Posters of the group adorned my bedroom walls, and I often listened to their cassettes front to back. I remember decorating my Pee-Chee one year with red, black, and white masking tape to mimic Eddie's guitar. I must admit, it looked pretty cool!

I think what made Eddie Van Halen such an amazing musician was that he was a tinkerer and perfectionist. Whether it be writing songs, playing music, or building guitars, he would spend tremendous amounts of time bringing perfection to his artistry. Eddie never formally learned to read music, nor did he take guitar lessons. I love that creative do-it-yourself attitude!

A few of my favorite Van Halen songs include the edgy "Mean Street", the mellow "Secrets", and the provocative "Everybody Wants Some". Eddie's brother, Alex Van Halen, really pounds the drums on that track!

No one can deny that each member of the The Rolling Stones is amazing, but Charlie Watts was the one that impressed me the most. I loved his dapper attire, along with his occasional sly smile.

Charlie may have dressed to impress, but wasn't a showy player. He didn't perform many drum solos, and usually stuck with a basic four-piece drum set. He brought perfection to The Stones.

Many may not know, but Charlie Watts also performed with several jazz bands. His own jazz band was The Charlie Watts Quintet. Other jazz ensembles included: The A, B, C & D of Boogie Woogie, Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, and Rocket 88.

I greatly respect Charlie's dedications in life, not only to The Stones since their beginning in 1963, but also to his wife of 57 years, Shirley Ann Shepherd. - Carmine Schulze, Aug 2021
