CARMINE & TIM SCHULZE

We both grew up near Portland in Vancouver, Washington, and met our sophomore year of high school. We then lived in Seattle where we graduated from the University of Washington.

Then in 1991 we married, and made our way to the Midwest near Chicago, where Tim went to graduate school at Northwestern University.

During Tim's two post-docs, we were fortunate to experience life in NYC and England, where Tim was at the Courant Institute at NYU, and DAMTP at the University of Cambridge.

In 1999 we made Knoxville our home, where Tim was a mathematics professor for nearly 26 years at the University of Tennessee. Sadly Tim passed away in March of 2025. He will be greatly missed by so many, including friends, family, colleagues, collaborators, and his wife of 33 years, Carmine.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter once said: “A strong nation, like a strong person, can afford to be gentle, firm, thoughtful and restrained. It can afford to extend a helping hand to others. It's a weak nation, like a weak person, that must behave with bluster and boasting and rashness and other signs of insecurity.”
